Oxitone technology delivers on the promise of wearable devices for remote patient monitoring

Oxitone® Improves How We Monitor, Triage, and Treat Chronic Disease

There’s no such thing as a crystal ball that can perfectly predict the future. But thanks to remote patient monitoring (RPM) and predictive analytics, we are getting closer. Using a wearable medical monitoring device lets us leverage patient-generated insights like never before. This means better management of at-risk populations, earlier triage and intervention, and reduced hospitalizations.

Patients with chronic disease can go many years without treatment, or they can experience sudden emergencies that shock their care teams. Research shows that patients with chronic disease are 33% more likely to experience serious illness and even death after emergency visits. This is because it is often difficult to access their recent medical records, making it challenging to triage and manage these patients in time-sensitive situations.

Oxitone® is a pioneer in wearable medical monitoring devices that can help overcome these challenges. The Oxitone® 1000M remote patient monitoring system comprises an innovative wrist-worn multi-parameter monitoring device, software with predictive artificial intelligence (AI), and a convenient web-based portal to access patient data. Together, these technologies have the potential to reshape how we assess, triage, and treat chronic disease patients.

Pulse Oximetry Has Leveled Up

In 1974, a simple but revolutionary device called the pulse oximeter was first invented. These devices could clip onto a patient’s finger and instantly measure the amount of oxygen in the blood, or oxygen saturation. In only a year, pulse oximetry helped reduce emergency care and anesthesia-related deaths by more than 90%. Along with temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiratory rate, blood oxygen saturation was quickly recognized as the fifth critical vital sign.

The advantages of traditional pulse oximeters are that these medical monitoring devices are noninvasive and intuitive to use. However, the disadvantages are that they are not that comfortable for continuous wear and may not be accurate during heavy activity. Because it is so hard to get continuous readings, important trends can be easily overlooked.

Oxitone® is the first FDA-cleared and CE-marked wrist-worn sensor for comprehensive continuous monitoring that includes pulse oximetry. Oxitone® 1000M is a convenient wearable wrist-worn medical monitoring device that can monitor multiple vital signs. This allows for the real-time, continuous collection of a complete set of critical vital signs.

How Does Oxitone® Work?

Oxitone® 1000M is a comfortable and easy-to-use medical monitoring device that fits on a patient’s wrist, much like a smartwatch. The stylish form factor is familiar to most patients, which promotes compliance, and the unique flexible design ensures accuracy across a wide array of adult wrist shapes and sizes.

Oxitone’s first-in-class Ulnar Bone FlexSenseTM Technology works by using a series of LED lights and an elastic photoelectric sensor (or photodetector) placed on the wrist. It uses a technology called trans-illumination, which works by shining bi-color blue and red LED lights at the bony part of the wrist, called the ulnar bulge. Blood cells that are carrying oxygen molecules (oxyhemoglobin) absorb some of this light. Then, the photodetector records how much light is left and uses this value to calculate the exact amount of oxygen in the blood.

Because of its unique design, it keeps working as patients go about their day—even during exercise or other heavy activity. Clinical studies have shown that Oxitone® 1000M is both accurate and precise, even during daily activities.

Best of all, Oxitone’s wearable medical monitoring devices have a sleek design and are comfortable for extended wear. This means that data can be collected continuously to identify important medical trends both in the clinic and at home. This helps Oxitone take the surprise out of the acute period following emergency visits and in some cases, prevent emergency visits altogether.

Predictive Analytics through Artificial Intelligence (AI) Is a Game Changer

Through predictive analytics, health care providers are redefining how patient-generated health data can be used to deliver on the promise of remote patient monitoring technology. With real-time data from medical monitoring devices like Oxitone, health care providers can better manage risk and schedule timely interventions.

AI technology can predict patient outcomes, but this is not one-size-fits-all. For it to work, we need continuous and accurate data from multiple vital signs, and data needs to be immediately accessible to doctors and care teams.

The unique AI-driven system used in Oxitone® 1000M allows for rapid decision-making using a comprehensive panel of continuous vital signs. By bringing together this data in one place, AI creates unique opportunities to improve decision-making. This can mean classifying patients into better-defined diagnostic and severity categories, visualizing predictive trends and multi-parameter baseline variations, and monitoring immediate and prolonged clinical response after essential medical care.

While it is not a crystal ball, AI technology takes us one step closer to faster, timelier, and more effective interventions for patients with chronic disease.

Delivering on the Potential of Continuous RPM

By spotting trends and intervening early, Oxitone® can deliver on the promise of continuous remote patient monitoring across a range of conditions. Oxitone wearable medical monitoring devices can help stop unnecessary heart attacks and pulmonary arrest deaths. Oxitone’s technology can also help monitor patients in infectious disease outbreaks and other emergencies. In the current public health crisis, Oxitone® 1000M has been used to monitor COVID-19 patients. Any time that unexpected emergencies occur, continuous monitoring can help reduce emergency admissions and readmissions by identifying trends early.

Perhaps most importantly, Oxitone’s technology puts all this information directly in the hands of the doctors and patients who need it the most.

Here at Oxitone®, we boost value-based healthcare by delivering extraordinary patient, clinical, and economical outcomes at reduced medical utilization and cost. Patients need a prompt response to emergencies. Physicians need an easy and timely follow-up with patients. Our mission is to transform chronic disease management and help save lives worldwide.
